Lowe's Protection Plan Review (2024) | Services and Cost (2024)

Last Updated: Aug 10, 2024

Lowe’s Home Improvement sells a variety of home appliances and equipment. But big-ticket items — like your refrigerator, oven or clothes washer — are not only expensive up-front, but costly to fix. See how you can cover the cost of repairs or replacements of items you purchase in this Lowe’s Protection Plan review.

Unlike a traditional home warranty, which covers a variety of home appliances and systems, a Lowe’s Protection Plan offers an extended warranty for a single item. We’ve read the fine print of Lowe’s Protection Plans to help you choose the best warranty and decide if coverage is worth it.

Our Thoughts on Lowe’s Plan

We gave Lowe’s Protection Plans 3.5 out of 5 stars based on our provider review methodology. Started as a small general store in 1921, Lowe’s has a solid reputation as a home improvement retailer nationwide. As a result, Lowe’s extended warranties are available in all 50 U.S. states.

Unlike a traditional home warranty, Lowe’s limits its protection plans to a single item, and customers do not pay for coverage monthly. Instead, you purchase protection with cash or a credit card at the time of sale as an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty. We found many consumer complaints about the warranty’s limitations, service and the value of the coverage compared to other companies.

Lowe’s Protection Plans vs. the Competition

Check out the table below to see how a Lowe’s Protection Plan compares to other warranty products for appliances and other household products. Note that Lowe’s Protection Plans are not a home warranty, but can offer coverage for similar items.

  • Refrigerator

  • Lawn mower
  • Pressure washer
  • Trimmers
  • Routers
  • Drills and drivers

  • Water heaters: The three- or five-year plan also offers coverage of tankless or traditional water heaters.

Lowe’s Protection Plans Exclusions and Coverage Limits

The limitations on Lowe’s Protection Plans vary depending on the product you purchase. Generally, Lowe’s excludes coverage of products used for commercial purposes. Additionally, the plan will not cover repairs or replacements if items are subject to neglect or abuse. Coverage also excludes damage due to unauthorized modifications or repairs.

Lowe’s Protection Plans Cost

Lowes offers various protection plans depending on the item you purchase and how much it costs. We’ve included a few examples below, but you can find more information by using the company’s online pricing tool.

Lowe’s Protection Plan Availability

Lowe’s Protection Plans are available in all 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii. Service, reimbursem*nt, appliance repair and replacement parts for products are not available for items outside of the U.S.

Lowe’s Protection Plan Reviews

Based on our research, Lowe’s Protection Plan customer reviews are mixed. Customers appreciate the toll-free phone number and website to access claims but note issues with the processing timeline. There are multiple people to deal with, including Lowe’s customer service reps and separate contractors that handle repairs, making it difficult to arrange next-day or other emergency services.

However, customers appreciate the bonus features Lowe’s offers with its protection plans. For example, the Payback Reward or Restock Your Food Reward for major appliances pays customers if they don’t file a claim or if their food spoils due to a faulty fridge or freezer. We’ve included examples of both positive and negative reviews below:

“Bought [a] Samsung washer with [a Lowe’s] five-year warranty [and] in year three, the washer had issues with the LCD screen. Called the warranty company and it connected me to a local appliance shop. [The shop] couldn’t order the LCD screen and didn’t know when the parts would be coming in —apparently, it would ship from Korea. Being that we were a household with two adults and two young kids, being without a washer was an inconvenience. I was persistent that Lowe’s [would] do something about this. [I] spoke to a manager [who] let me borrow a clearance machine and got it delivered and hooked up while we waited for the replacement part. Took about two weeks [for] the appliance repair place to come out to swap out the part. Problem solved.” —bokworski via Reddit

“If you buy the Lowe’s warranty as a [bundle] it covers both [appliances] for $269. Also, if you are buying the connections (dryer vent, cord and water lines), [Lowe’s] will give you half the cost back in the form of a gift card. On top of that, if you never file a claim, [Lowe’s will] return 30% of the $269 as another gift card. Plus, it covers 100% of parts and labor and power surge and lightning strikes. Can save you if something goes wrong since parts are often on backorder and repairmen [may] charge for a service call just to tell you they can not get parts. With [a] Lowe’s warranty, [it] replaces the entire unit for free.” —Psalmopeus via Reddit

Do not buy this policy. We have had such poor customer service, inability to get correct answers [and] failure to have accurate records on our washer and dryer. After trying to schedule service we decided to cancel the policy. We canceled it exactly as required in the Protection Plan contract. We received an email advising it was canceled and that we would receive a check, which never came. Have spent literally hours trying to [reach] customer service and multiple emails. Spoke to three reps and was advised it was not canceled [and] they could not explain the email noting the cancellation and refund. Promised a call from a senior supervisor — nothing, still after six weeks no resolution.” —solheim5148 via ConsumersAdvocate.org

Rarely purchase a protection plan but did for our water softener. [The] unit stopped working and after a long battle of locating the plan, we submitted a claim. Was told they would contact me within 2 days and 10 days later, no response. Chatted with customer service and had to give them all the same information again. NEVER will purchase a service plan again. Avoiding purchasing anything from Lowe’s if at all possible.” —nealveon via ConsumersAdvocate.org

Frequently Asked Questions About Lowe’s Protection Plans

Lowe’s Protection Plans cover parts and labor for damage due to normal wear and tear after a manufacturer’s warranty ends. It also covers damage from a power surge and defective products, including reinstallation if an appliance needs replacement. Plans cover major brands sold at Lowe’s, such as Maytag, Samsung and Whirlpool. Products eligible for coverage include major appliances, power tools, grills, plumbing components, water heaters and more. Plan costs vary depending on the item you want to cover, and you can choose protection for three or five years.

A Lowe’s Protection Plan offers a standalone extended warranty for DIY home improvement enthusiasts. The main benefit of an extended warranty is adding coverage after the manufacturer’s protection ends, providing peace of mind if you experience issues later on. In addition to covering repairs due to everyday wear and tear, Lowe’s has a Fix It or Replace It policy to cover product replacement when needed.

Other benefits include customized coverage and a one-time payment instead of monthly plan costs. Lowe’s promises to repair products within seven days. And for your convenience, you can choose to pick up replacement parts and products at the store or opt for home delivery.

You can submit a request for service reimbursem*nt by visiting Lowe’s claims website. The service is available 24/7, 365 days a year. Lowe’s also offers reimbursem*nt through its protection plan rewards, which vary depending on the product you cover. For example, the Payback Reward will pay you back up to 30% of protection plan costs if you don’t make a first-time claim during your contract.

Other reimbursem*nts include the Restock Your Food Rewards program, which offers customers $300 each time a defective refrigerator or freezer causes food loss. Additionally, with the Repair Quick™ program, Lowe’s will pay customers $50 if the company can’t schedule a repair service within seven days.

The Lowe’s Protection Plan does not cover all damage and incidents. Extended warranty coverage generally does not extend to the following:

  • Accidental damage
  • Cosmetic damage
  • Routine maintenance
  • Product abuse or neglect
  • Unauthorized repairs
  • Consumables
  • Rust, liquid spills and environmental factors

Lowe’s Protection Plans do not include a deductible for repairs and service calls. So you should not have to pay extra fees after buying a plan, no matter how many times a repair person visits your home for a service call. Lowe’s also does not have a deductible for replacements, deliveries or extra product parts.
